Cape Cod Camping, Surfing, Scuba Diving and Other Adventures for Couples
There are plenty of Cape Cod adventures for couples who are looking for a vacation with a bit more of an edge to it and, being a somehwhat adventurous couple ourselves, we've tried many of them and can offer a few pointers. You might want to try mountain biking, for instance. There have been reams of prose written about Cape Cod's many well-known paved bike trails, but did you know that there are also plenty of off-road trails that will challenge even the most avid mountain biker? The Trail of Tears at West Barnstable Conservation area is one of the most popular and offers an amazing variety of terrains from pine covered singletrack with roots sticking out of the ground to hardpack rock and deep soft sand. There's always something to surprise and challenge the hard core cyclist.
For those seeking their Cape Cod adventures off dry land, how about scuba diving? The Cape is a treasure trove of dive sites, both fresh water and salt water. Freshwater ponds are perfect for less experienced divers, since there is no current, and they often offer clearer views of marine life. Offshore diving is for more advanced divers, who can explore many of the estimated 3,000 shipwrecks there are in the area, see greater populations of fish and even go lobstering, although a lobster license is required. There are a number of local dive shops and operators where you can rent gear, receive excellent training and book dive trips. If you prefer to stay on the surface of the ocean, you can try ocean kayaking. This is far more strenuous than the more sedate form you can do in creeks and ponds. Dealing with the currents and the surf is challenging and will give you one heck of an upper body workout, but the rush you get is really quite something.
And speaking of getting a rush from the ocean, there's always surfing. While few would argue that it compares with Bondi Beach or the Oahu's North Shore in Hawaii, Cape Cod does have a distinct surf culture of its own, and sampling it can be a lot of fun for couples looking for Cape Cod adventures. Our favorite place to surf is Cahoon Hollow in Wellfleet, where you can rent a board, a wet suit and an instructor for a reasonable price. Do check out the surf reports, particularly if you're traveling any distance to get there. It's a long way from where we live on the Upper Cape to Wellfleet only to find the waves are just not there that day. And if the power of the waves isn't enough for you, try adding the power of the wind, as well. Kiteboarding is a growing sport for the truly adventurous and Cape Cod offers some of the best conditions in the northeast. With the recent advances in kite technology, learning the basics and dealing with ever-changing wind speeds is easier than ever before - and a whole lot safer. AirSupport Kiteboarding in West Dennis is one of New England's premier kitesurfing instructional facilities. They offer certified lessons in a safe supervised environment with friendly and knowledgeable instructors. Check it out, but be warned, this is not for the feint of heart. We'll be adding more Cape Cod adventures in the coming months, just as soon as we work up the courage to try them out, so do check back often. If we survive the ordeals, we'll write about them here.
