Cape Cod SportsThe Cape Cod sports scene a vibrant one, which makes it a terrific place for visiting couples if, like us, you love to play and watch sports. The Cape has its own baseball league, a less celebtrated, but still popular amateur soccer league and several dozen first class golf courses.
We also host the Falmouth Road Race, the Figawi Sailing Regatta and the Cape Cod Open Golf Tournament. The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference is headquartered in Centerville and there are sports bars and pubs all over the Cape where you can play darts and pool or take in a ball game on TV. And while we don't have any major league professional teams here, we're close enough to either Boston or Foxboro to drive and see the "Big Boys" on a day trip. Here's a terrific site that will give you the full low down on the Boston sports scene, if that's what you're planning to do.
Some of the most famous ones include Ocean Edge, Willowbend, the Ballymeade Country Club and Farm Neck Golf Club on Martha's Vineyard, where Bill Clinton used to play when he vacationed on the island during his Presidency. The Cape's nice, temperate climate allows hardy golfers to play this particular Cape Cod sport up to nine months of the year, though good tee times can be tough to snag in July and August. More...
The best-known Cape Cod sports attraction has to be the Cape Cod Baseball League, which offers a two month long season of competitive baseball that's like a trip down memory lane for those who long for the sport's purer past. There are ten Cape Cod League baseball teams located Capewide from Wareham to Orleans, each offering a showcase for some of the most promising young college players in the country. In fact, as many as one in six Major League Baseball players started their careers by playing on the Cape. The Cape’s baseball league is a part of the National Alliance of Summer Baseball and is run by a team of dedicated volunteers who are charged with marketing, promoting and organizing the league and finding local families to host the players for the duration of their stay. The level of play is considered as good as what you might see in single-A Minor League Baseball. In addition to the regular 44-game league schedule, and playoffs, the league hosts an a annual all-star game and also has a Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame Museum that is located on the lower level of the John F Kennedy Hyannis museum on Hyannis Main Street. The players also help run a number of soccer camps all across the Cape. More recently, the team has relocated to Maine for a season or two. Team officials insist they plan to return soon, so we’ll see what happens in the coming years. The Cape Cod amateur soccer league has eight teams and plays on Wednesdays and Sunday nights throughout the summer. Players range in age from young studs (high school and college players) to old duffers (35-45 year-olds). While nowhere near as high a level as its baseball counterpart, it’s still a pretty good level of play.
The best ones will have the latest electronic tracking systems to find the fish, they’ll provide all the tackle and instruction you’ll need, and will even clean your catch for you.
The largest by far is the Falmouth Road Race (in fact it's the largest sporting event of any king on Cape Cod). Every year, the race attracts up to 10,000 runners to the Cape including a number of world-class athletes. It is a spectacular event and great fun to watch or compete in.
