Spohr Gardens
A Lovely Cape Cod Garden in Falmouth Mass.

Nestled on the banks of Oyster Pond in Falmouth, Spohr Gardens occupies six acres on Fells Road in the Quissett section of town, about half-way between the center of Falmouth and Woods Hole.

What we love most about this beautiful spot is that it was created by a “regular” couple just like us, who shared a life together, as well as a lifelong love of gardening. Viewed in that context, this lovely spot is perhaps one of the most romantic places on Cape Cod.

Charles Spohr was an engineer who worked for the town of Falmouth, while his wife Margaret was a registered nurse. They purchased the house on Fells Road in 1951 and started the gardens around their home soon after. Over time, they added to their holding by purchasing additional plots of adjacent land.

Over the years they planted thousands of daffodils (over 30 different varieties), rhododendrons that are now 40 over years old, and countless hostas, azaleas, daylilies and asters.

Spohr Gradens do not have the expansive lawns that, say, Heritage Museums and Gardens has, but there are lots of pathways and trails, each taking visitors to delightful and surprising spots.

And there is a real nautical feel to the gardens that's in keeping with its location. This is largely thanks to Charles Spohr, who was a collector of anchors and ships bells. One of the anchors is said to have come from the famous British ship HMS Bounty.

Charles died in 1997, and Margaret passed away four years later. They left behind the Spohr Gardens Charitable Trust which provided funds to maintain the gardens. The Friends of Spohr Gardens organization was founded in 2004 to raise additional funds since the money left in the Spohrs will for that purpose was starting to dwindle.

While admission is free, collections boxes are available for you to make donations. We encourage you to do so in order to keep this little-know treasure alive and well as the Spohrs would have wanted.

Directions

Spohr Gardens is the sort of place you might miss, if you don't know how to get there, so here are some directions that will get you there. It's an ideal side trip if you're going to or from Woods Hole.

From the center of Falmouth take Route 28 out of town, heading towards Woods Hole and take a left onto Locust Street. This becomes Woods Hole Road, and you need to drive for a couple of miles to the traffic light at the junction with Oyster Pond Road.

Take a left onto Oyster Pond Road. It's a winding road, so take it slowly or you miss the turn. Fells Road is the first left. It's a very sharp turn, right after a bend about half a mile down.

Take Fells Road a few hundred yards to number 45.
