Car-Free Vacation?

My boyfriend and I are thinking of taking a trip to the Cape in the summer but neither of us is old enough to rent a car and we've heard that it really is a car-dependent destination.

Are there any places you would recommend staying which are not only easy to get to without a car but where we could enjoy ourselves and not get bored?
