Chatham Bars Inn is the place to go on the Cape for couples in need of a little (well, actually quite a lot) of pampering. The Cape Cod landmark, which overlooks Pleasant Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the last grand oceanfront resorts in America.

It was originally built in 1914 and once attracted guests who would visit for several weeks at a time, bringing huge entourages of family members, servants and enough luggage to see them through an entire summer. A $14 million upgrade that was completed in 2007, added still more amenities to what was already arguably Cape Cod's most luxurious resort.

The ground are huge, covering some 25 acres, and are noted for their beautiful landscaping. There are 217 individually decorated rooms in the main building, including 68 suites. Then, scattered throughout the grounds, are an additional 34 quaint yet luxurious Cape-style cottages that offer a little more privacy.

There are no fewer than six different restaurants on site, including the elegant Main Dining Room, the more casual Tavern, the relaxed Veranda and South Lounge, the ocean-side Beach House Grille, and the newly opened “Maguro” sushi restaurant.

Other activities include tai chi, yoga, tennis clinics, Frisbee golf, bike and harbor tours, and a spa. The nine-hole Chatham Seaside Links golf course is just around the corner.
