Hotels and Activities

Hi there,

My boyfriend and I are looking to stay in Cape Cod from Aug 14-16th 2011.

We were looking at places to stay, and was looking at the Ocean Park Inn which has a great whale watching package deal (which is the main reason we are going). I have been reading some mixed reviews online, and was wondering if you would recommend staying there? We just need something basic and not too expensive as we are students.

I was also wondering if you had any tips on activities? We had looked at the glass museum and whale watching. Any good areas for shopping (local shops, etc) and good seafood places with lobster?

Thanks so much!

Hi Vivian!

Hi Vivian,

We haven't stayed at the Ocean Park Inn,but our friends who have stayed at Cottage Grove in Eastham loved the place. Others stayed at Eagle Wing, also in Eastham and really like it there.

You may find it hard to find a room so make sure to book soon-

Eastham is a good location, the lower Cape is our favorite.

As far as activities, if you like to bike, the Rail Trail and Province Lands are super paths and well worth the 'sweat'- There are plenty of places to rent bikes if you don't have them.

If you like to Kayak, check out Goose Hummock in Orleans- they run some fabulous trips around the Town Cove, Pleasant Bay and Nauset Marsh. You can also just rent Kayaks for a very reasonable rate.

Fort Hill in Eastham is a great place to hike.

What about a fire on the beach? All of the National Seashore beaches allow fires but you have to pull a permit. Check out our Cape Cod Beaches page for more information.

You'll find plenty of shops in most of the towns- Ptown has some great shops where you'll find handmade jewelery, soaps, and vases, etc. Wellfleet and Chatham have great galleries and shops (like all Cape Towns)

The Sandwich Glass Museum (I think that is what you are referring to) is a nice museum if you like glass. They have a great gift shop stocked with reproductions and modern glassware for reasonable prices. Heritage Museum is also in Sandwich and if you like gardens, this is a nice diversion and satisfies the car lover with some 30 antique cars. They have other exhibits as well including a Kitchen Exhibit showcasing America's Kitchens from 1759-1957. If you are in Sandwich, be sure to stop at Cafe Chew, our favorite Sandwich spot and tell Tobin and Bob, the owners, that we sent you!

As far as food goes- the Cape has tons of restaurants but many of them are just okay- A lobster dinner is going to be expensive- if you are adventurous, stop at a seafood shop, get them to cook you and your boyfriend a lobster and take it to the beach along with some wine, french bread and plenty of napkins. You'll save a fortune and if you combine that with a fire, you'll have a perfect Cape Cod moment.

Otherwise, we'd recommend Mac's Shack in Wellfleet or Blackfish in Truro for a nice meal. Mac's opened up a seafood market right in Eastham and there's an adjacent restaurant but we haven't tried that place yet!

Eat@ Adrians in Truro has a guest chef this summer and we've been told they've been pumping out some fabulous meals. That's on our list to try next week.

(Don't eat at the Lobster Shanty in Eastham, right across from the Salt Pond Visitor's Center)

Let me know if you have more specific questions about other towns and have a great stay!!! And if you get a chance, make sure to send us a review!

Karen and Michael!
