Meteor Shower Gazing?

by Marc
(Hartford, CT)

Later this week is the Persied meteor shower. Can you suggest any places we can go to see them where we won't get booted outside the public parking times of 9am to 9pm? We're staying on Main Street in Hyannis.

Whenever there’s an event like this and we want to go sky watching, we head for Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable. The trick here is to get to the darkest place possible, away from the “light pollution” of street lights, car headlamps, etc. Sandy Neck certainly fits that bill. It’s so dark there it can get a little spooky.

From where you’re staying, head for the Airport Rotary and take Route 132 past the Mall heading back towards the Highway. Don’t get on the highway but, instead, go underneath, right to the end of 132 where it intersects with route 6a. Left on 6a will take you towards Sandwich and you actually have to go into Sandwich, just a few hundred yards beyond the town line, to get to Sandy Neck. Sandy Neck Road is one the right, just after Amari’s Restaurant on the left and before the Blue and White motel on the right called the Sandy Neck Motel. (If you pass the motel, you’ve missed the turn.)

Go along Sandy Neck Road to the end and you’ll come to the parking lot for the beach. By that time of night, you should be fine for undisturbed sky watching, as long as the weather cooperates, of course.
