The Town of Dennis for CouplesSome of the Cape's best beaches can be found in the town of Dennis. Chapin, Mayflower and Corporation beaches are on Cape Cod Bay side of town, while Sea Street and West Dennis beaches stretch along Nantucket Sound to the south.
In general, we prefer the north side of town since the south is a little too commercialized for our taste. The warmer waters of Nantucket Sound tend to attract more families with young children, the accommodations are more likely to be motels, rather than B&Bs, and the shops on Route 28 is more likely to be of the souvenir variety, rather than the antique shops and galleries we prefer along Route 6A. But whatever your preference, there is always something to do here, and there is a surprisingly wide array of activities for couples of all tastes, ages and dispositions.
Cultural CouplesThe town of Dennis is perhaps the heart of our cultural life on Cape Cod, largely because of the Cape Cod Center for the Arts, a 26-acre enclave just off Route 6A that houses the Cape Playhouse theater, the Cape Cod Museum of Art, and the Cape Cinema. All are among the Cape's most cherished cultural institutions and are places where we love to spend time.
The Cape Playhouse is America's oldest professional summer theater, having staged plays each summer since 1927. It has been known as the birthplace of the stars, since many legendary actors of the screen like Bette Davis, Gregory Peck, Lana Turner, Ginger Rogers, Humphrey Bogart, Julie Harris and Jane Fonda performed there early in their careers. Nowadays, it's better known as the place where Broadway goes to summer so, while you're less likely to see the household names of Hollywood, you'll still see some terrific performances of Broadway plays and shows. Meanwhile, the Cape Cod Museum of Art, is perhaps the most Cape-focused art museum on Cape Cod, devoting itself to the celebration of the considerable contribution that artists associated with the Cape have made to American art. Admission is $8.00 (free with your Go Boston Card). And the Cape Cinema is one of our favorite places to see independent films that might not show up at the local multiplex. The interior features a vaulted ceiling covered with beautiful murals. It's quite spectacular. Places to Stay in the Town of Dennis
Where to Eat in the Town of DennisTheRed Pheasant is located on Route 6a (Main Street) and is widely regarded as one of the best restaurants on Cape Cod. Beautiful setting, nice ambiance and superb food. A few steps away from the Red Pheasant, and rigt across the street from the Cape Cod Center for the Arts, Scargo Cafe is also a terrific option for both lunch and dinner. It is reputed to serve the best rack of lamb on Cape Cod. On of the newer restaurants in Dennis that we've heard great things about is Fins, which is also on Main Street (do you notice a pattern here). As the name would suggest, it specializes in seafood, we've heard the striped bass is wonderful. See more Cape Cod Restaurant recommendations.
Active CouplesDennis is the starting point of the Cape Cod Rail Trail, the best know of the Cape's "big four" rail trails. We both like to spend time on the trail throughout the summer and fall. The trail actually winds through several towns but is arguably at its most scenic in the town of Dennis. This is also home of the highest point on the Cape, so some of the walking trails around town can quite challenging. One place not to miss is the Scargo Tower which, while not as impressive as, say, the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, is built 300 feet above sea level so it offers panoramic views of Cape Cod Bay and the surrounding area.
