The Town of Falmouth for CouplesThe Town of Falmouth is a vibrant year-round Cape Cod destination made up of eight separate villages, which offer plenty of activities for all kinds of couples, from theater to windsurfing, to biking, shopping and dining. It's a terrific place to spend your Cape vacation, or even just to visit for a weekend.
First settled in 1660 by Quakers and Congregationalists fleeing religious persecution in Sandwich and Bourne, Falmouth quickly became a noted farming and whaling community. Although a few family farms remain today, it's now known for its beautiful beaches, marshes and seaside toen charm. Falmouth Center is the hub of the town and has the many of the same national retail chains as Hyannis does. It has a small mall (a fraction of the size of the Cape Cod Mall) but is better known for the independent retail shops on Main Street than for the box store experience. Woods Hole is also the best place to catch a ferry to Martha's Vineyard, so it's always bustling in the summer time, and its a great place to just sit and people watch. Things To Do in the Town of FalmouthThe Shining Sea Bikeway is one of Cape Cod's "Big Four" paved bike trails, and is arguably its prettiest. The recently expanded trail now stretches over 10 miles from North Falmouth to Woods Hole and is a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon. There are plenty of places to go kayaking in the town of Falmouth. One of our favorites is Waquoit Bay, which, not only provides a nice sahllow protected bay for you to paddle on, but also a number of tidal rivers flowing inot it, that you can explore at your leisure. If you're looking for a romantic place to while away a couple of hours, try a gentle stroll around Spohr Gardens. This really is a beautiful spot, and well worth a visit. Admission is free (though they do ask for a donation) and the tranquil setting is enchanting.
Places to Stay in Falmouth
Where to Eat in the Town of FalmouthThe Landfall Restaurant in the center of Woods Hole is a place we often head to for a Greyhound cocktail when we cycle the Shining Sea Bikeway. It is constructed partly out of wood taken from old shipwrecks and offer authentic Cape Cod cuisine of swordfish, clams, scallops and season fin fish. Also in Woods Hole is Pie in the Sky. Not so much a full service restaurant, but a great little coffee shop and bakery that does terrific lunches and sandwiches. Our favorite Chinese restaurant on Cape Cod is Peking Palace on Main Street in Falmouth. Great Chinese food and also terrific sushi. (By the way, their sister restaurant, Asia, in Mashpee Commons is also well worth a visit.) Also on Main Street is the Stone L'oven Pizza Co., which cranks out hand tossed Neapolitan-style pizza with a zippy home-made sauces and plenty of options for toppings. Sporty CouplesThe Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League play their home games at Guv Fuller Field during the months of June, July and August. Check here for a Falmouth Commodores game schedule. The Falmouth Road Race is a terrific event to either watch or paticipate in if you're in town the second weekend in August. There are a number of terrific golf courses in the town of Falmouth, perhaps the best-known being the Ballymeade Country Club. Public play is always welcome, and they also offer Tennis, a health club and a pool.
